In this year’s municipal election, many of the Lehigh Valley candidates running for county offices will face off in November. That’s because they aren’t being challenged by members of their own parties. But there are two races to watch during next week’s primary election.
Five district seats are up for grabs on the Lehigh County Board of Commissioners. But only Districts 4 and 5 have official contested primaries.

Incumbent Democrat Geoff Brace is squaring off against Milagros Canales in District 4 which covers Allentown’s Center City and West End.
In District 5, Joyce Moore and Omar Ray are competing for the Democratic nod to go up against the incumbent Republican. The seat represents the southern municipalities of the county.
There is a write-in campaign for the seat in District 2: Democrat Mark Fedorov would need at least 100 write-in votes to get on the November ballot.
In Northampton County, there are no contested seats in the primary.
The members of the legislative county bodies are elected to 4 year terms and are charged with community development, overseeing elections, health and human services, as well as the county prisons.
Northampton County voters will see a home rule charter amendment ballot question, with the option to vote “yes” or “no”: Should County Council be composed of nine Commissioners? Five Commissioners elected at large and four Commissioners elected by District.
It aims to change only the titles of the County Council members to commissioners, but the structure of the council would remain the same.
